Course Description
This course provides instruction in the theory and application of solid state devices in the electronics industry. It places emphasis on the physical characteristics and uses of solid state devices. Topics include PN diodes, power supplies, voltage regulation, bipolar junction theory and application, field effect transistors, and special applications.
Course Outcomes
PN Diodes
Order Description
1 Describe the fundamentals of semiconductor theory, and electrical properties of
semiconductor materials.
2 Identify diodes and their symbols.
3 Describe the effects of forward bias and reverse bias on a PN junction.
Power Supplies
Order Description
1 List personal and equipment safety rules in working with power supplies.
2 Draw, measure, and calculate the circuit parameters of half-wave, full-wave, and bridge
rectifier circuits.
3 Describe the characteristics and applications of passive filtering circuits for power supplies.
4 Measure and calculate the parameters of passive filtering circuits for power supplies.
Voltage Regulation

1 Describe the characteristics and application of zener diodes in voltage regulation circuits.
2 Measure and calculate the parameters of a zener diode circuit of a power supply.
Bipolar Junction Theory and Application

1 Explain basic construction and biasing of bipolar junction transistors.
2 Draw, analyze, and measure the parameters of common emitter, common base, and
common collector circuit configurations.
3 Describe the amplify classification of common emitter, common base, and common
collector circuit configurations.
Field Effect Transistors

1 Describe the theory, operation, and amplifying action of field effect transistors (FET).
2 Measure and compute the circuit parameters for an FET network.
3 Draw and explain the common gate, common source, and common drain for an FET
configuration.
