Course Description

This course is designed to examine in detail current practices, laws, and regulations pertaining to the management of both solid and hazardous wastes, air quality, water quality, and wildlife and fisheries. The student will gain an overview of the major U.S. environmental laws, their amendments, and the regulations that implement them. Major topics include Oil Pollution Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, underground storage tanks, Toxic Substances Control Act, CERCLA/SUPERFUND, SARA/EPCRA, pesticides, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson), Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act (Dingell-Johnson), Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Lacy Act, Endangered Species Act, and CITIES.

History of Environmental Law

Understand the history and progression of environmental protection and the social, political and economic factors that lead to changes in environmental conservation.

Air, Soil, and Water Conservation

Understand the major legislation and government agencies responsible for air, soil, and water conservation. Topics include: Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Farm Bill (Conservation Reserve Program), Natural Resource Conservation Service, EPA, EPD (Georgia DNR), Best Management Practices.

Pollution and Toxicant Law and Regulation

Understand the major legislation responsible for pollution regulation and what each does. Topics include Oil Pollution Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Underground Storage Tanks, Toxic Substances Control Act, CERCLA/SUPERFUND, SARA/EPCRA.

Wildlife and Fisheries Law

Understand the major legislation responsible for protection and conservation of wildlife and fisheries resources. Topics include Endangered Species Act, CITIES, Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson), Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act (Dingell-Johnson), Lacy Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Conservation Reserve Program (Farm Bill), Wetland Reserve Program (Farm Bill), Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (Farm Bill).
