Course Description

This course provides continued instruction in the study of human movement. Topics include posture and equilibrium; gait, locomotion, and balance; advanced gait training techniques; and the assessment of muscle performance.

Course Outcomes

Assessment of Muscle Performance

Order

Description

1

Review muscle origins, insertions, innervations, and functions.

2

Describe manual muscle test.

3

Explain the definition of each muscle grade.

4

Differentiate between a gross and a specific manual muscle test.

5

Identify the muscle test grades and explain the definition of each.

6

Perform a gross and specific manual muscle test to assess muscle function.

7

Relate substitutions in muscle testing.

8

Demonstrate proper technique for application of special tests of muscle function.

Posture and Equilibrium

Order

Description

1

Define equilibrium, center of gravity, and line of gravity.

2

Explain factors which affect the stability of an object.

3

Locate the center of gravity in a human.

4

Determine points through which line of gravity falls when a human is standing erect.

5

Draw a normal line of gravity on a skeleton or diagram.

6

Explain how balance is maintained in the upright position.

7

Apply rationale for appraising body alignments and body posture.

8

Differentiate between ideal and faulty posture with use of a plumb line.

9

Recognize postural abnormalities by checking body balance, length measurements, alignment, and muscle tightness.

10

Recognize major points that should be looked at in a posture examination.

11

Demonstrate proper techniques for posture awareness training.

12

Effectively collect data to quantify the patient's response to interventions.

13

Safely progress the patient interventions through the plan of care.

Gait, Locomotion and Balance

Order

Description

1

State the components of the gait cycle.

2

Determine the major muscle groups which are active in each phase of normal gait.

3

Identify various gait deviations and the possible causes of each.

4

Identify substitutes for gross movement.

5

Effectively collect data to quantify the patient's response to interventions.

6

Safely progress the patient interventions through the plan of care.

Advanced Gait Training Techniques

Order

Description

1

List common gait deviations.

2

Identify common gait deviations.

3

Choose proper therapeutic exercise techniques to improve and correct gait deviations.

4

Apply proper therapeutic exercise techniques to improve and correct gait deviations.

5

Identify various gait deviations and their causes.

6

Practice and observe abnormal gait.

7

Effectively collect data to quantify the patient's response to interventions.

8

Safely progress the patient interventions through the plan of care.
