Course Description

This course presents an introduction to the principles and procedures utilized in the veterinary practice diagnostic laboratory. Instructors place emphasis on laboratory safety and management, as well as the technical skills in microscopy, microbiology, and parasitology. Topics include microscopy and laboratory equipment; handling of laboratory specimens, laboratory safety, and quality control; parasitology; microbiology; and necropsy. Students must pay a $30 supply fee when registering for this course.

Microscopy and Laboratory Equipment

Handling of Laboratory Specimens, Laboratory Safety, and Quality Control

Explain basic principles of laboratory safety including sample handling.

Discuss various commercial blood tubes and their uses.

Determine gross characteristics of urine and feces.

Demonstrate packaging of specimens for shipment.

Describe the maintenance requirements and quality control procedures for laboratory equipment.

 

Parasitology

Description

1

Perform fecal sample preparation for flotation, centrifugation with flotation, direct smear, and sedimentation.

Perform collection and evaluation of skin scrapings.

3

Identify and differentiate among common mites, lice, ticks, fleas and flies.

4

Identify and differentiate among common nematodes, trematodes, cestodes, and protozoa (ova and adult, cyst and trophozoite).

 

Microbiology

Description

Demonstrate the ability to collect representative samples for microbiologic procedures including bacterial and fungal specimens.

Establish cultures and identify common pathogens using commercial kits.

Demonstrate the preparation of bacterial cultures and performance of sensitivity tests.

Perform common biochemical tests and staining procedures.

5

Demonstrate dermatophyte culture preparation and identify common dermatophytes.

 

Necropsy

Order

Description

1

Perform a postmortem examination or dissection on a non-preserved animal, including sample collection and preparation for storage and/or shipping.

Explain how to safely handle rabies suspects and samples.
