Course Description
This course provides experience necessary for professional development and completion of requirements for state licensure. Emphasis will be placed on the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes. The requirements for this course may be met in a laboratory setting or in a combination of a laboratory setting and an approved internship facility. Topics include haircutting/styling, hairstyling texturizing, shaving, beard trimming, thermal waving, hairpiece fitting and styling, safety precautions, and licensure preparation.

Haircutting/Styling
- Seat the patron.
- Determine customers' desires and needs.
- Sanitize personal implements, equipment, and tools.
- Maintain personal implements, equipment, and tools.
- Apply sanitation and shop safety rules and practices to all skill procedures.
- Demonstrate and perform proper clipper techniques.
- Demonstrate and perform proper shear and comb techniques.

- Analyze hair and scalp.

- Demonstrate an understanding of and the importance of selecting proper chemicals.
- Apply chemicals.

Beard Trimming
- Perform beard and skin analysis.
- Demonstrate lathering of patron's beard.
- Demonstrate steaming of patron's beard.
- Demonstrate relathering of patron's beard.
- Conduct patron preparation and setup for beard trimming.
- Cut beard to patron's desired shape.
- Design mustache and/or beard style suitable for the patron.
- Perform appropriate safety precautions.
- Remove clipped beard from face and neck.
Thermal Waving
- Demonstrate the use and handing of thermal curling irons.
- Wave hair using thermal instruments.
Hairpiece Fitting and Styling
- Measure the head and fit wig or hairpiece.
- Determine styles and colors of wigs and hairpieces to match patron's features.
- Clean wig or hairpiece.
- Shape wig or hairpiece to patron's features.
- Style wig or hairpiece to patron's features.
Safety Precautions
- Put into practice and comply with safety rules and regulations for barbering.
Licensure Preparation
- Put into practice all requirements for taking the final examination.
- Put into practice all requirements for taking the State Board of Barbering licensure examination.
