Course Description

This course introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to create shapings, pin curls, fingerwaves, roller placement, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, and comb-outs. Students practice styling techniques on manikins during laboratory exercises. Topics also include braiding and intertwining hair, styling principles, pin curls, roller placement, fingerwaves, skip waves, ridge curls, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, comb-outs, and safety precautions and practices.

Course Outcomes

Braiding/Intertwining Hair

  • Understand the different types of braids and their uses.
  • Apply the different types of braids on a manikin.
  • Explain intertwining hair.
  • Implement intertwining hair on a manikin.

Styling Principles

  • Describe styling instruments.
  • Show the different parts on a manikin.
  • Apply shaping to the manikin head in preparation of pin curls.

Pin Curls

  • Explain the parts of a pin curl and describe their purpose.
  • Construct pin curls using various bases.

Roller Placement

  • Describe the types and shapes of hair rollers and their uses.
  • Utilize rollers to create a style using different roller placements for various amounts of volume.

Finger Waves

  • Explain the principles of finger waving.
  • Utilize finger waving skills on a manikin.

Ridge Curls

  • Describe ridge curls and ridge curl techniques.
  • Demonstrate ridge curling on a manikin.

Skip Waves

  • Describe skip waves and skip waving techniques.
  • Incorporate skip waves into a style.

Blow Dry Styling

  • Identify tools and instruments used in blow drying.
  • Style using the blow dryer and attachments.

Thermal Pressing

  • Explain thermal waving techniques.
  • Establish waves by using thermal instruments.

Artificial Hair and Augmentation

  • Demonstrate various techniques for using artificial hair and augmentation in styling on a manikin.
  • Utilize the procedures for fitting, cleaning, shaping, and styling all types of human hair and synthetic wigs and hairpieces.

Comb-Out Techniques

  • Identify implements used in a comb-out.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and handling of instruments used in blow drying.

Safety Precautions

  • Identify unsafe conditions that may exist in shampooing and styling.
  • Identify unsafe conditions for styling hair.
  • Explain how each unsafe condition will be corrected.
