Course Description

This course develops students' knowledge, skills, and abilities to support young children's literacy acquisition and development from birth through age twelve. Topics include developmental continuum of reading and writing, literacy acquisition from birth to five years of age, literacy acquisition in kindergarten, literacy acquisition in early grades, and literacy acquisition in children who are culturally and linguistically diverse.

Developmental continuum of Literacy Acquisition, Including Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening

  • Demonstrate understanding of literacy acquisition in infants an toddlers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of literacy acquisition in preschoolers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of literacy acquisition in kindergartners.
  • Demonstrate understanding of literacy acquisition in primary grades children.

Supporting Literacy Acquisition Birth to Five Years of Age

  • Incorporate planned and spontaneous reading and experiences.
  • Plan experiences for exposure to and concepts about print.
  • Identify and plan strategies to support linguistic and phonemic awareness, including puppets, dramatic play, poetry, and storytelling.
  • Identify strategies to support inventive spelling.
  • Identify appropriate literature selection.

Supporting Literacy Acquisition in Kindergarten

  • Outline appropriate techniques for vocabulary development, concept of word and letter naming in kindergarten.
  • Identify and plan strategies to support linguistic and phonemic awareness, including puppets, dramatic play, poetry, and storytelling.
  • Identify appropriate literature selection.

Supporting Literacy Acquisition in Primary Grades

  • Provide opportunities for systematic code instruction along with meaningful connected reading.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities for fluent accurate word identification, integrated reading and writing and independent practice.
  • Identify and plan strategies to support linguistic and phonemic awareness, including puppets, dramatic play, poetry, and storytelling.
  • Identify appropriate literature selection.

Supporting Literacy Acquisition in Children Who are Culturally and Linguistically Diverse

  • Apply knowledge of cultural and linguistic diversity and demonstrate understanding of the interrelationships among culture, language and thought, and the function of home language in the development of children.

Media and Technology to Support Literacy Acquisition

  • Evaluate and demonstrate use of technology with children, including assistive technology for children with disabilities.
