Course Description
This course introduces the operational theory, systems terminology, installation, and programming procedures for programmable logic controllers. Instructors place emphasis on PLC programming, connections, installation, and start-up procedures. Other topics include timers and counters, relay logic instructions, and hardware and software applications.

Course Outcomes
Industrial Safety
- Perform Mount a lock-out tag for use with a padlock.
- Perform Wear approved PPE (shoes, eye wear, hard hats).
PLC Hardware and Software
- Identify and discuss function of all PLC components.
- Discuss and install PLC software.
- Discuss common terminology use in PLC applications.
PLC Installation, Configuration , and Setup
- Completely install a PLC processor, power supply and IO cards.
- Use PLC software to setup and configure a PLC for operation.
PLC Programming Basics
- Discuss the operation of the following logic gates: AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR, NOT, and BUFFERS.
- Discuss and convert values using Decimal, Binary, Octal, Hexadecimal, and Binary Coded Decimal.
- Discuss the terms related to data storage including: Data Words, Bytes, Nibbles, Bits, Signed and Unsigned Integers, and Double Words.
Ladder Logic Instructions
- Discuss and execute relay instructions including Examine if Closed/Normal Open, Examine if Open/Normally Closed, Output/Coil, Latch and Unlatch, and One Shot.
- Discuss the addressing for bit level instructions.
Timers and Counters
- Discuss the operation of on-delay timers, off-delay timers, and retentive timers.
- Program and execute each type of timer in a program.
- Reset operation for timers.
- Discuss the operation of up and down counters.
- Program and execute each type of counter in a program.
- Reset operation for counters.
Connecting Field Devices to I/O Cards
- Discuss the operation of Triacs and Diacs.
- Discuss the difference between Sourcing and Sinking.
- Discuss the difference between NPN and PNP.
- Install switches and other control devices to input cards and address the terminals.
- Install relays, indicator lights, solenoids, and motor starters to output cards and address the terminals.
- Write and execute a program using field connected devices.
