Course Description

This course introduces students to the basic concepts of substantive criminal law and its procedural aspects with an emphasis on the constitutionally protected rights of the accused in the criminal justice system. Topics include substantive criminal law and procedures and criminal litigation support.

Substantive Criminal Law

  • Explain what constitutes a rime.
  • Describe the elements of certain crimes.
  • Differentiate among each crime type.

Constitutional Issues of Criminal Law and Procedure

  • Discuss search and seizure of property.
  • Discuss seizures of persons and identification procedures.
  • Discuss the scope of the right to counsel.
  • Summarize the exclusionary rule.
  • Discuss government monitoring of communications.
  • Discuss interrogation and self-incrimination.

Criminal Litigation Support

  • Organize files for use during criminal litigation.
  • Define terms relevant to criminal litigation.
  • Organize documents and other exhibits used at trial or in pretrial proceedings.
  • Describe the relevance of federal, state, and local rules of procedure.
  • Classify documents/materials.
  • Interview clients and witnesses.
