Course Description

This course provides study in surgical assisting, operative care, and anesthesiology. Instructors place emphasis on assisting in surgical procedures and administering and monitoring anesthesia. Topics include surgical assisting, anesthesia, special equipment, and emergencies.

Course Outcomes

Surgical Assisting

  • Discuss operating room sanitation and care.
  • Properly identify patients and surgical procedures.
  • Implement and maintain operative and anesthetic records and logs including a controlled drug log.
  • Discuss and demonstrate proper operating room conduct and asepsis.
  • Discuss and demonstrate patient preparation, including surgical site preparation using aseptic techniques, and positioning form common surgical and obstetrical procedures.
  • Assist and/or observe common veterinary surgical procedures (elective and/or non-elective).
  • Discuss veterinary surgical procedures including ovariohysterectomy, castration, cesarean section, orthopedic procedures, tail docking, onychectomy, laparotomy, dehorning, prolapsed organs, and dystocia.
  • Assist with exposed tissue and organ care during surgery.
  • Properly perform the procedure for passing instruments and supplies during surgery.
  • Identify common suture materials, types, and sizes.
  • Describe and provide post-operative care including fluid therapy, adequate nutrition, wound management, and bandaging, discharge instructions, and suture removal.
  • Discuss the procedures for post surgical equipment, surgical room or area, and personnel clean-up.
  • Explain proper surgical waste disposal.

Anesthesia

  • Review pre-operative patient evaluations, assess the patient's risk and determine appropriate anesthetic and analgesic protocols for maximum safety and effectiveness.
  • Discuss recognition of pain in patients including subjective and objective parameters.
  • Coordinating with all team members, evaluate patient, and implement pain management protocols as directed.
  • Calculate dosages of appropriate anesthetic-related drugs.
  • Administer anesthetic-related drugs by injection, mask, induction chamber, or endotracheal tube as directed.
  • Induce maintain general anesthesia using IV and/or inhalation anesthetics.
  • Place endotracheal tubes in patients when appropriate.
  • Maintain and use laryngoscopes.
  • Discuss and identify the parts of the anesthesia machine and anesthesia machine maintenance.
  • Maintain and operate oxygen sources.
  • Maintain and operate anesthetic waste gas scavenging systems.
  • Select, utilize, and maintain rebreathing and non-rebreathing anesthetic circuits.
  • Select, utilize, and maintain induction chambers and masks.
  • Perform maintenance and operation of esophageal stethoscopes, pulse oximeters, dopplers, sphygmomanometers and capnographs to monitor patient status in all stages of anesthetic procedures.
  • Utilize clinical signs and appropriate equipment to monitor patient status in all stages of anesthetic procedures.
  • Maintain and operate an ECG machine, and recognize normal and abnormal ECG tracings and audible sounds.
  • Describe and provide post-operative care including pain management and fluid therapy.
  • Determine/maintain fluid infusion rate.

Special Equipment

  • Describe the operation and maintenance of fiver optic equipment.
  • Describe the operation and maintenance of suction and cautery machines.

Emergencies

  • Maintain emergency medical supplies/crash cart.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patients in compromised states.
  • Perform appropriate first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed including proper use of an ambu bag.
  • Demonstrate ability  to calculate and administer anesthetic antagonists and emergency drugs as directed.
