Course Description

This course builds on the introduction to Chemical Restructuring of Hair course to address advanced theory and practice relating to the chemistry and chemical reactions of permanent waves and hair relaxers. It provides continuing instruction in the precautions and special problems involved in the application of permanent waves and relaxers. Application of perms and relaxers on live models is included. Topics include permanent wave techniques, safety procedures, chemical relaxer techniques, application procedures on manikins, time relaxer applications, and Hazardous Duty Standard Act.

Permanent Wave Technique

  • Define permanent waving
  • Explain chemistry of perming.
  • Analyze hair and scalp.
  • Apply and properly demonstrate sectioning, blocking, and wrapping on a manikin.
  • Identify and list pertinent data for permanent waving clients' hair.

Chemical Relaxer Techniques

  • Define chemical hair relaxing.
  • Explain chemistry of relaxers.
  • Analyze hair and scalp.
  • Apply sectioning for relaxer on a manikin or live client.
  • Identify and list pertinent data for chemically relaxing clients' hair.

Safety Procedures

  • Explain safety procedures for permanent waving and chemical hair relaxing.

Application Procedure (Manikin or Live Work)

  • Demonstrate proper procedures for permanent waving on a manikin or live client.
  • Demonstrate procedures for applying a relaxer on a manikin or live client.

Permanent Wave Application (Manikin or Live Work)

  • Apply knowledge to wrap the hair.
  • Apply perm solution.
  • Use knowledge to detect hair pattern.
  • Show the removal of permanent wave solution from hair.

Hair Relaxer Application (Manikin or Live Work)

  • Apply knowledge to conduct patron preparation and setup for hair relaxer application.
  • Apply cream relaxer.
  • Distinguish change of texture.
  • Use knowledge to remove cream from hair.

Timed Permanent Wave (Manikin or Live Work)

  • Demonstrate proper permanent wave procedures within an acceptable time frame for wave to straight hair.
  • Demonstrate proper permanent wave procedures within an acceptable time frame for curly hair.

Timed Relaxer Application (Manikin or Live Work)

  • Demonstrate proper chemical hair relaxer procedures within an acceptable time frame.
  • Apply precautions during permanent waving and relaxing.

Safety Precautions

  • Explain State and Federal regulations pertaining to relaxers and cold waves.

Hazardous Duty Standard Act Compliance

  • Explain State and Federal regulations pertaining to relaxers and cold waves.
  • Demonstrate proper safety precaution.
