Course Outcomes

Lathes

  • Determine the use and setting of each lathe control for specific jobs (facing, drilling, cutting, and threading).
  • Use and maintain coolant system on a lathe.
  • Clean and lubricate the lathe to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Perform basic lathe maintenance.
  • Interpret blueprints for material tyupe and size, type of cutting tool required, and lathe control settings to complete the cutting operation specified.

Lathe Setup

  • Determine the type of cutting tool, tool holder, and work holding device for each turning operation.
  • Plan sequence of lathe operations.
  • Setup engine lathe.
  • Indicate and machine parts in a 4-jaw chuck.

Lathe Operations

  • Machine parts using faceplate4.
  • Machine eccentric diameters.
  • Thread internal diameters.
  • Repair threads.
  • Cut special threads forms.
  • Hold dimensions using feed, precision, and indicator stops on lathes.
  • Hold dimensions using digital readout on lathe.
  • Machine parts using carbide tooling.
  • Machine parts using ceramic tooling.
  • Machine parts using steady rest.
  • Machine long parts using follower rest.
  • Machine parts using jigs and fixtures.
  • Grind parts using tool post grinder.
  • Machine parts using quick change tooling system.
  • Identify machining problems, determine the cause, and correct problems.

Safety

  • Demonstrate shop safety awareness.
