Course Description

This course is offered as a beginning general foundation class and focuses on social work practice with individuals. It will emphasize the initial contact and rapport-building skills utilized in partnering with clients in the social work process, interviewing skills and counseling techniques, assessing a client's situation, and determining the appropriate level of intervention for the change effort. Students will be expected to participate in interpersonal sharing and activities. Additional areas of study include interviewing for assessment, the person in environment perspective, motivational interviewing, and ethical framework for practice.

Course Outcomes

Professional Concepts and Practices for the Individual

  • Identify and conceptualize the knowledge, values, ethics, and social work principles that provide the basis for professional social work practice.
  • Identify and describe value-based and ethical dilemmas in social work practice.

Awareness of Individual Diversity and Bias

  • Display an awareness, appreciation, and sensitivity for human diversity (including gender, age, race, class, sexual orientation, culture, and physical conditions) and an understanding of the relationship between gender, race, age, class, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, physical status, and oppression.
