Course Description

This course provides students with theory and clinical experience in the area of preventive and public health dentistry. Topics include etiology of dental disease, patient education techniques, plaque control techniques, types and use of fluoride, diet analysis for caries control, and dietary considerations for the dental patient.

Course Outcomes

Etiology of Dental Disease

  • Identify common diseases that have manifestations in the mouth.
  • Identify and describe the clinical manifestations of the inflammatory process.
  • Identify and list pathological conditions.
  • Describe and name degenerative diseases of the oral tissues.
  • Describe and identify degenerative diseases of the oral tissues to include dental hygiene-related problems.

Patient Education Techniques

  • Provide patients with dental health education presentations
  • Functions of the primary and permanent teeth and the relationship of supporting structures.
  • Function of the gingival and the clinical signs of healthy gingival.
  • Predisposing factors for gingival diseases and the disease of the periodontium.
  • Provide individual instructions.
  • Explain the procedures and services being delivered to the patient and/or family.

Plaque Control Techniques

  • Evaluate a patient's oral health care status and habits.
  • Instruct patients in various techniques of tooth-brushing.
  • Describe implements used for mechanical control of bacterial plaque such as: floss, disclosing agents, stimulators, other special aids.
  • Evaluate a patient's progress in and response to home-care therapy.

Types and Use of Fluoride

  • Explain to the patient the relationship of fluoride in controlling caries.
  • Identify the types of fluorides and rinses.
  • Selecting acceptable effective fluoride products.
  • Prepare and use the correct technique for various methods of applying fluoride.
  • Instruct the patient for the proper care of the mouth after a fluoride application.
  • Assist with and/or apply fluoride.

Diet Analysis for Caries Control

  • Describe how carbohydrates and plaques promote caries.
  • Conduct a dietary assessment for a patient.
  • Analyze a patient's dietary assessment and be capable of providing input on how to improve a patient's diet in relationship to caries control.

Dietary Consideration for the Dental Patient

  • Identify the four food groups and the daily-recommended amounts of each.
  • Know the source and functions of food and nutrients in maintaining good health.
  • Recognize food fallacies.
  • Describe the clinical signs of good nutritional status.
  • Identify the energy producing nutrients and state their fuel value.
  • Calculate the energy needs of an individual based on age, sex, and health status.
  • Discuss the results of improper consumption of kilo calories.
  • Identify the functions, sources, RDA, and classifications of fats.
  • Identify the functions, sources, RDA, and classifications of carbohydrates.
  • Define fiber and lists its function and food source.
  • Explain the difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and identify their food sources.
  • Identify the functions, structure, sources, RDA, and classifications of protein.
  • Discuss the general functions and classifications of vitamins.
  • Identify the functions, sources, RDA, and deficiencies of fat and water soluble vitamins.
