Course Description

This course introduces anatomy and physiology, disorders of the skin, and nutrition and health of the skin. Topics include cells, tissues, organs, and body systems (skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, endocrine, excretory, respiration, digestive, and structure of the skin).

Course Outcomes

Cells/Tissues/Organs

  • Discuss cells, tissues, and organs and how they work together to form the body's systems.
  • Discuss the effect on the various organs and systems when giving a massage and performing other steps during treatments.

Muscular System

  • Describe muscular structures and functions, and the various nerves that are affected during facial treatments.

Circulatory System

  • Explain the functions of the circulatory system and the importance of blood and lymph circulation.

Structure of the Skin

  • Describe the structure and composition of the skin (histology).
  • List and explain the function of the skin.

Nutrition and Health of the Skin

  • Explain how the skin is nourished.
  • Explain how important the skin is to bodily heath and how it reacts to the sensations of pressure, touch, temperature, and pain.
  • Explain dermatology terms related to skin conditions and lesions.
  • Explain what nutrition is and why7 it is important to the health of the skin.
  • List the three basic food groups and describe their importance.
  • Explain calories and how diets can affect our skin.
  • Explain why water is so important to the health of the skin.
  • Discuss how hormones, medications, and some of our habits can affect the skin.
  • List different causes of some allergies.
  • Discuss different vitamins used in cosmetics.

  • Explain the difference between disorders and disease.
  • Demonstrate the proper procedure for lifting blackheads and whiteheads.
