Course Description

This course orients students to health information management. Topics include an introduction to the structure of healthcare in the United States and its providers and the structure and function of the American Health Information Management Association.

Course Outcomes

Health Information Management

  • Define the role of the health information management (HIMT) department in the healthcare organization.
  • Recognize the components of HIMT.
  • Discuss the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) history, purpose, structure, and operation.
  • Identify the key HIMT professional associations.
  • Understand the importance of a professional code of ethics and what the HIMT Code of Ethics means.
  • Examine a basic overview of health information management, purposes for maintaining a health record and various terms.
  • Discuss policies and procedures for access and disclosure of PHI.

Healthcare Delivery Systems

  • Discuss the organization of healthcare delivery in the United States.
  • Differentiate information system policies and procedures required by national health information initiatives on the health care delivery system.
  • Distinguish current laws, accreditation, licensure, and certification standards related to health information initiatives from the national, state, local, and facility levels.
  • Recognize policies and procedures to comply with the changing regulations among various payments systems for healthcare services such as Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and so forth.
  • Differentiate the roles of various providers and disciplines throughout the continuum of healthcare and respond to their information needs in today's healthcare organization.
