Course Description
This course provides opportunities for students to develop their skills in the setup and operation of metal cutting lathes. Topics include safety, lathe parts and controls, lathe tooling and tool bit grinding, lathe calculations, and lathe setup and operations.
Course Outcomes
Safety
- Identify and demonstrate lathe operation safety procedures.
- Identify an demonstrate grinder operation safety procedures.
Lathes
- Explain the function of each part of the lathe.
- Determine the use and setting of each lathe control for specific jobs (facing, drilling, cutting, and threading).
- Use and maintain coolant system on a lathe.
Lathe Tooling
- Identify lathe tools for turning, facing, threading, and cut-off operations.
- Grind lathe turning and facing tools.
- Grind lathe form tools for grooving and relief cuts.
- Determine the type of cutting tool, tool holder, and work holding device for each turning operation.
Lathe Calculations
- Use charts to find appropriate feeds and speeds.
- Calculate and set lathe speeds, feeds, and depth of cut.
- Calculate tapers, thread pitch, and geometry.
Lathe Setup and Operations
- Plan sequence of lathe operations.
- Setup engine lathe for part holding.
- Align lathe centers.
- Perform turning and facing operations with part held in chuck.
- Machine parts between centers.
- Machine parts using collet chucks.
- Perform knurling operations.
- Center drill and drill parts.
- Undercut diameters and shoulders.
