Course Description
This course provides students with knowledge of patient care and assessment, contrast agents, MRI safety, medical ethics and law, cultural diversity, and patient information management. Topics include MRI history, anatomy, patient care and assessment, MRI safety, instrumentation, MRI fundamentals, and image parameters.
Course Outcomes
MRI History
- Cite a brief history of magnetic resonance imaging and its evolution.
Anatomy
- Identify four imaging planes used in magnetic resonance imaging.
Patent Care and Assessment
- Describe patient preparation for magnetic resonance imaging exams.
MRI Safety
- Define SAR.
- Define a quench and explain the appropriate safety protocol for a quench.
Instrumentation
- Distinguish between static and gradient magnetic fields.
MRI Fundamentals
- Understand basic MRI physics concepts.
- Define Precession.
Imaging Parameters
- Explain basic contrast parameters. T1 Recovery, T2 Decay Time, Proton Density, TR, TRE, Flip Angle.
- Define imaging parameters manipulated by the MRI technologist.
- Distinguish between spin echo, fast spin echo, gradient recall echo, and inversion recovery sequences.
- Explain the signal-to-noise ratio and describe the effect of adjusting imaging parameters.
- Explain the contrast-to-noise ratio and describe the effect of adjusting imaging parameters.
- Differentiate between T1, T2, T2*, and PD.
