Course Description

This course introduces students to the computed tomography department and provides an opportunity for participation in and observation of CT procedures. Students progress toward completion of clinical competency evaluations. Topics include exam preparation, patient care, equipment utilization, exposure techniques, evaluation of CT procedures, and the incorporation of contrast media.

Course Outcomes

Exam Preparation

  • Prepare the CT suite for each exam, including linen, table attachments, and any supplies necessary for completion of each exam.
  • Verify correct patient and exam information.
  • Obtain and record patient history, including lab results and previous diagnostic studies.
  • Input patient demographics and exam information into the computer console.
  • Manipulate gantry and table controls to accurately position the patient for a given exam.

Patient Care

  • Demonstrate age appropriate communication skills to explain the CT procedure to the patient and/or patient's family.

Equipment Utilization

  • Scan patients following departmental protocol.
  • Accurately window/level images for radiologist interpretation.
  • Print images in the appropriate format for the given exam, if necessary.
  • Send study to PACS or alternate storage media for long-term storage.

Exposure Techniques

  • Select appropriate technical factors for the exam.

Evaluation of CT Procedures

  • Accurately window/level images for radiologist interpretation.

Incorporation of Contrast Media

  • Prepare contrast media for injection.
