Course Description
This course provides instruction in vocabulary and comprehension skills with emphasis on critical reading skills. Topics include vocabulary skills, comprehension skills, critical reading skills, study skills, and content area reading skills.
Course Outcomes
Vocabulary Skills
- Use word parts to determine word meanings.
- Use context clues to determine word meaning.
Comprehension Skills
- Identify stated or implied main ideas of paragraphs.
- Identify supporting details.
- Identify controlling points or thesis statements of longer passages.
- Identify transition words, phrases, and sentences.
- Identify paragraph patterns, such as time order, examples, series, comparison and contrast, and cause and effect.
- Examine graphs, charts, tables, and maps.
Critical Reading Skills
- Differentiate between facts and opinions.
- Infer meanings and draw conclusions.
- Deduce author's purpose and tone.
- Interpret metaphors, similes, personification, and analogies.
- Deduce author's opinion.
- Formulate author's opinion based on propaganda techniques employed.
- Evaluate the point and support for an argument.
Study Skills
- Develop textbook reading skills, which include previewing, reviewing, annotating, evaluating.
- Develop skills, such as outlining, mapping, and summarizing reading passages.
- Develop reading techniques that help prepare for objective and subjective tests.
- Locate information in textbooks, reference materials, and resources including the Internet and GALILEO.

- Develop content area reading skills by reading a variety of materials.
