Course Description
This course prepares students to perform laboratory math calculations required for entry-level technical positions in biotechnology companies and research laboratories. Practice problems emphasize a review of basic math concepts, units of measurement and conversions, and methods for preparing laboratory solutions. The course is primarily organized around laboratory applications.

Course Outcomes
Review of selected basic math techniques
- Calculate with scientific notation.
- Calculate with exponents.
- Calculate with logarithms.
Units of measurement and conversions
- Convert from one metric unit to another metric unit.
- Convert units using the proportion method of unit conversions.
- Convert units using the unit canceling method of unit conversion.
Introduction to concentration problems
- Describe the difference between amount and concentration.
- Prepare a solution with the correct concentration of solute.
- Determine the amount of solute in a solution.
Preparation of laboratory solutions
- Prepare laboratory solutions that contain one solute.
- Prepare laboratory solutions that contain more than one solute.
- Compute concentrations with the C1V1=C2V2 equation.
