Course Description
This is an applied course covering habitat management practices beneficial to wildlife. Emphasis is placed on methods for increasing quality food production and cover, and developing and execution management plans. Upon completion students should develop, interpret, and execute management plans to establish, maintain, and improve quality habitat.
Course Outcomes
Mechanical Techniques
- Explain importance of timing, frequency, and intensity related to plant community response.
- Implement cool season disking to promote beneficial wildlife habitat.
- Establish wildlife openings and bedding areas with chainsaw and chipper.
Native Vegetation Management
- Identify native plants and crops of the SE that are valuable to wildlife as food and cover.
- Propose techniques to increase native plants and which crops to plant to meet objectives.
Wildlife Food Plots
- Apply correct amount of nutrients and lime for a given area based on soil sample recommendations.
- Collect soil samples for nutrient and pH management.
- Perform seed bed preparation.
- Establish quality food plot by planting the correct amount and type of crop.
Prescribed Fire
- Discuss factors affecting fire behavior and smoke dispersion.
- Develop burn plans to meet landowner objectives.
- Implement prescribed fire based on a burn plan.
Herbicide Application
- Explain the labeled uses for various herbicides used in land management.
- Apply appropriate herbicides to meet management objectives.
- Demonstrate an understanding Quality Vegetation Management.
Management Plans
- Develop management plans.
