Course Description

This course provides for the hands-on development of operational skills in the maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial control systems and automated equipment. Topics include data manipulation, math instructions, an introduction to HMI, analog control, and troubleshooting discrete I/O devices.

Course Outcomes

Industrial Safety

  • Perform Wear approved PPE (shoes, eye wear, hard hats).
  • Perform Mount a lock-out tag for use with a padlock.

Data Manipulation

  • Discuss the data file types of PLC's.
  • Discuss the procedure for Word level addressing.
  • Discuss and program the following instructions: greater than, less than, equal to, greater than or equal, less than or equal, limit test.
  • Discuss and program a move and masked move instruction.

Math Instructions

  • Discuss and program add, subtract, multiply, divide.
  • Discuss and program a compute instruction.
  • Discuss and program conversion instructions for binary to decimal or decimal to binary.

Program Control Instructions

  • Discuss and program a master control reset instruction.
  • Discuss and program jump and label instructions.
  • Discuss and program a temporary end instruction.
  • Discuss and program a jump to subroutine instruction.

Introduction to HMI

  • Discuss and demonstrate the use of HMI devices in industry.
  • Discuss and demonstrate the configuration of HMI devices.
  • Discuss the use of alias and tag references.
  • Program and execute an HIM for control of discrete I/O.
  • Discuss and demonstrate animation capabilities of HMI's.

Analog Control

  • Discuss the difference between digital and analog signals.
  • Discuss the types of analog signals: 4-20mA, 0-10v.
  • Discuss the types of analog inputs.
  • Discuss the types of analog outputs.
  • Discuss and program a scaling operation.

Troubleshooting Discrete IO Devices

  • Discuss and demonstrate the techniques for troubleshooting automated processes using PLC's.
  • Troubleshoot an automated process using the PLC interface.
