Course Description

This course provides advanced instruction related to the care of both large and small animals. Instructors place emphasis on collecting samples, medication administration and therapeutics, catheterization, bandaging techniques, dentistry, and advanced patient care procedures.

Course Outcomes

Sample Collection

  • Describe and demonstrate the appropriate technique used to perform cystocentesis in small animal patients.
  • Collect milk samples and conduct routine mastitis testing procedures.

Medication Administration and Therapeutics

  • Perform ocular diagnostic tests: fluorescein statin, tonometry, and Schirmer tear test procedure.
  • Perform the administration of parenteral medications including subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous routes using proper technique and an appropriate site for the species presented.
  • Perform administration of oral medications utilizing balling gun, dose syringe, oral speculum and stomach tube, nasogastric tube or hand pilling as is appropriate for the medication selected and the species presented.
  • Describe and demonstrate gastric intubation procedures for oral medication administration in small animals.
  • Describe and demonstrate the procedure for the appropriate administration of enemas.

Catheterization

  • Describe and demonstrate the appropriate procedures for urinary catheterization of small animal patients.
  • Perform placement of intravenous catheters in cephalic, saphenous, and/or jugular veins using aseptic techniques as appropriate for the species presented.

Bandaging Techniques

  • Apply and remove bandages and splints.
  • Apply equine leg wraps.
  • Apply equine tall wraps and ties.
  • Describe and demonstrate appropriate bandage care procedures, including the application of emergency splints and bandages.

Advanced Patient Care

  • Describe/demonstrate rehabilitation (physical therapy) administration methods.
  • Explain recumbent patient care.
  • Describe the care and maintenance of indwelling tubes as utilized for diagnostics, treatments, and feeding.
  • Discuss the use of monitoring equipment to monitor patient vital signs.
  • Discuss recognition of pain in patients including subjective and objective parameters.
  • Understand life stage energy and nutrient requirements of well animals (dog, cat, horse, cow).
  • Develop and communicate hospital nutrition protocols.
  • Demonstrate understanding of breeding/reproduction techniques.
  • Demonstrate understanding of nursing care of newborns.
  • Develop understanding of wound management and abscess care, including procedures for cleaning and preparing them for surgical treatment.

Dentistry

  • Understand client education regarding home care.
  • Identify dental instruments and describe their use.
  • Discuss maintenance of dental instruments.
  • Perform routine dental prophylaxis.
