Course Description
This course continues the development of student knowledge in treating patients and preventing oral disease. Topics include instrument sharpening; patient assessment; antimicrobial use; pulp vitality testing; treatment of hypersensitivity; whitening; implant care; tobacco cessation; pit and fissure sealants; scaling, debridement, and root planing; ultrasonics and air polishing; dietary analysis; and applied techniques.

The student should be able to:
- Discuss emergency care protocol.
- Discuss infection control policy.
- Review, discuss, and demonstrate successfully the responsibilities of the clinical/radiology assistant and the clinical receptionist.
- Integrate policies and procedures into the clinical setting.
- Maintain documentation for aseptic protocol for dental unit and maintenance notebooks.
- Discuss Dental Hygiene rules and regulations for academic and clinical performance.

The student should be able to:
- Continue to analyze assessment findings and critically evaluate the significance of the conditions listed in previous clinical objectives.
- Continue to determine the appropriate goals, interventions, and expected outcomes associated with a dental hygiene diagnosis of the patient conditions as listed in previous clinical objectives.
- Demonstrate increased clinical ability to accurately assess each patient’s medical history and record vital signs.
- Continue to identify and attend to individual needs of each patient.
- Continue to develop a treatment plan for each individual patient after gathering assessments.
- Demonstrate increased clinical competency to assess and record the status of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity.
- Implement continued application of all previously learned clinical skills.

- Demonstrate increased clinical competency to effectively and safely remove all hard and soft deposits from the teeth of patients seen in clinic.

- Demonstrate proficiency with ultrasonic instrument.
- Identify indications and contraindications of use.
- Pulp Vitality Testing
The student should be able to:
- Recognize clinical and radiographic factors that suggest loss of pulpal vitality.
- Demonstrate pulp vitality testing.
- Treatment of Hypersensitivity
The student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the use of hypersensitivity agents.
- Identify characteristics and attend to factors that characterize dentinal hypersensitivity in the patient.
- Whitening
The student should be able to:
- Demonstrate use of alginate impression, pouring, and trimming of study models for fabrication of custom whitening trays.
- Demonstrate the types of whitening products and the procedures used for each one.
- Sealants
The student should be able to:
- Assess the patient for application of sealants.
- Apply pit and fissure sealants.
