Course Description

This course provides continued study in the principles and procedures for the veterinary practice diagnostic laboratory. Topics include hematology, clinical chemistry, cytology, serology, and urinalysis. Students must pay a $30 supply fee when registering for this course.

Hematology and Clinical Chemistry


Order


Description

Perform procedures to prepare blood samples for hematologic and blood chemistry tests.

Determine gross characteristics of serum and/or plasma

3

Determine hematocrit/PCV of blood

4

Determine total solids of plasma using a refractometer

5

Use automated cell counters to determine red and white blood cell counts, platelet counts, hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell indices.

Prepare and stain blood films

7

Perform a leukocyte differential including the calculation of absolute values.

Evaluate erythrocyte morphology.

Perform an estimated platelet count.

Calculate a corrected white blood cell count.

Perform a reticulocyte count.

Perform the activated clotting time test and/or mucosal bleeding time test.

Perform routine tests for detecting microfilaria using a direct examination +/- filter test

Identify common blood parasites (Mycoplasma haemofelis)

Perform blood chemistry tests

Cytology

Collect, prepare, and evaluate ear cytology.

Collect, prepare, and evaluate canine vaginal smears.


 

Serology

Perform ELISA serologic tests (Dirofilaria sp).

Perform a slide or card agglutination test.

Urinalysis

Determine  physical properties (color, clarity and specific gravity)

Perform testing of chemical properties

Prepare sample for urine sediment examination

Identify components of sediment in urine.
