Course Description
This course introduces concepts related to the responsibilities and procedures involved in a variety of early childhood care situations. Topics include historical perspectives; professionalism; guidance; developmentally appropriate practices; learning environments (including all children); cultural diversity; and licensing, accreditation, and credentialing.

Historical Perspectives
- Demonstrate familiarity with major contributors to the field of early childhood care and education, including theories of typical and atypical early childhood development.

- Examine a variety of early childhood care and education settings.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices
- Identify different types of planning for developmentally and individually appropriate curricula and instructional practices based on knowledge of individual children, the family, the community, and curricular goals, and content.
- Identify strategies for making transitions throughout the day.
- Recognize the components of a lesson plan.
- Explore the use of Early Learning Standards and GPS standards for planning developmentally appropriate lessons.
- Develop a daily schedule.
- Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of assessment strategies to document the development and learning of young children's cognitive, social-emotional, communication, motor, adaptive, and aesthetic development.
- Explore current developmental and learning experiences and teaching strategies with a continuum for the next age/grade level.
