Course Description
This course provides students with an understanding of developmentally effective approaches to teaching, learning, observing, documenting, and assessment strategies that promote positive development for young children. The course will enable the student to establish a learning environment appropriate for young children and to identify the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment in the development of curriculum for young children. Topics include observing, documenting, and assessing; standards; learning environments; development of curriculum plans and materials; curriculum approaches; and instructional media.
Course Outcomes
Observing, Documenting, and Assessing
- Identify purpose for observation.
- Demonstrate how to record and analyze observation.
- Review and compare at least three effective, research-based assessment techniques and their use in communicating with families and other professionals. (Examples are Teaching Strategies Gold, Brigance, Work Sampling System, Child Care Skills Checklist, Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Portage, or other systems utilized in the college's service area).
- Describe the use of assessment as a planning tool for curriculum using appropriate standards - GELDS, Common Core, Georgia Performance Standards, High Scope, Creative Curriculum, Regio, or other curriculum used in the service area.
- Discuss the responsibility to maintain ethical and professional standards.
Standards
- Explore age appropriate standards and their impact upon curriculum.
Development of Curriculum Plans and Materials
- Prepare developmentally appropriate curriculum materials using age appropriate standards.
- Identify and prepare components of a lesson plan using a format which may include objective writing from standards, procedure, accommodations/enrichments, and evaluations.
- Plan developmentally appropriate learning experiences applying age appropriate standards while using classroom and community resources.
Curriculum Approaches
- Explore at least three curriculum models that address the development of the whole child.
- Describe, plan, and implement appropriate transitional activities to assist with learning activities and guidance.
Instructional Media
- Demonstrate use of instruction media and technology to enhance assessment and instruction.
