Course Description

This course introduces the theory and skills necessary to apply basic haircutting techniques. Safe use of haircutting implements are stressed. The course also introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo hair. Laboratory training includes shampooing a live model. Topics include patron preparation, haircutting terminology, safety and sanitation, implements basic haircutting techniques, shampoo chemistry, and shampoo procedures.

Haircutting Terminology

  • Identify tapering terms and applications.

Shampoo Chemistry and Procedures

  • Describe the basic principles of cosmetic chemistry as applied to shampooing.
  • Identify emulsions and suspensions.
  • Explain the pH scale.
  • Conduct patron preparation and setup for shampoo service.
  • Select appropriate shampoos and conditioners.
  • Perform full shampoo service to include scalp manipulation, cleansing, and the application of conditioners and rinses as necessary.
