Course Description

This course develops instructional skills that enable students to work as paraprofessionals in programs for kindergarten through elementary age children. Topics include assessment and curriculum, instructional techniques, and methods for instruction in a learning environment.

Course Outcomes

Assessment and Curriculum

  • Review state and local goals and objectives for curricula by age/grade level.
  • Identify strategies to assess progress toward state and local goals.
  • Describe the importance of responsible assessment practices.
  • Compare authentic assessment and standardized assessment.
  • Identify the assessment methods used in the local school system.
  • Identify necessary and desirable classroom records.
  • Demonstrate evaluation techniques (EX (PIE) Plan, Implement, Evaluate).

Instructional Methods and Techniques

  • Explore and demonstrate traditional instructional techniques (i.e., teacher directed, child directed inquiry based).
  • Explain and identify developmentally appropriate and child-centered philosophy.
  • Explore and demonstrate cooperative learning strategies and techniques.

Instructional materials and Preparation

  • Create a teaching unit integrating all learning domains.
  • Create appropriate materials for instruction.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using instructive technology found in local school system.
  • Identify components of an age appropriate learning environment
