Course Description

This course introduces the theory, procedures, and products used in the care and treatment of the scalp and hair. Topics include disease disorders and their treatments; the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo, condition, and recondition the hair and scalp; and safety and infection control.

Course Outcomes

Diseases and Disorders

  • Define the various disorders and diseases of the scalp.
  • Differentiate between diseases and disorders of the scalp which can safely be treated in the salon from those that require medical attention.
  • Identify the structure of the hair root and hair shaft and explain their functions.
  • Define the various diseases and disorders of the hair.
  • Differentiate between the diseases and disorders of the hair that can be treated in the salon and those that need to be referred to a physician.

Safety Precautions

  • Follow safety precautions for scalp and hair treatment.
  • Maintain work area in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling of electrotherapy devices and equipment.

Hair and Scalp Analysis

  • Analyze and make a distinction between normal porosity, texture, and condition from those which require specific handling.
  • Analyze and evaluate health scalp conditions from those which required specialized scalp treatments.

Basic Hair and Scalp Treatments

  • List products and supplies used for basic and corrective hair and scalp treatments.
  • Describe the benefits of scalp manipulations.
  • Perform a scalp massage.
  • Identify and explain the physical and chemical actions that damage hair.
  • Classify and describe types of reconditioning agents.
  • Provide conditioning treatments.

Shampoo Chemistry

  • Understand the chemical and botanical ingredients found in shampoos.
  • Distinguish the appropriate product selection in relation to the condition for the intended service.
  • Distinguish between emulsions and suspensions.
  • Demonstrate utilization of the pH scale.
  • Describe the uses and benefits of various types of shampoos and conditioners.

Shampoo Procedures

  • Identify and select appropriate shampoos.
  • Prepare a client for a shampoo employing all safety measures.
  • Perform proper shampooing and rinsing techniques.
