Course Description

This course provides the laboratory experiences needed to develop the skill levels required to be competent cosmetologists. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is prescribed by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion of the hours required for licensure. Topics include permanent waving and relaxers; hair color, foiling, and lightening; scalp, and hair treatments; haircutting, clipper design, precision cutting, and styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions and decontamination; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; product knowledge; customer service skills; client retention; State Board rules and regulations guidelines; State Board foundation prep; and professional conduct.

Course Outcomes

Permanent Waving and Relaxers

  • Integrate accurate methods of procedures; meet satisfactory level in competency application and execute completion of hours as directed by instructor for permanent waving, virgin relaxers, retouch relaxers, and soft curl permanents with instructor guidance support.

Hair Coloring and Bleaching

  • Integrate accurate methods of procedures; meet satisfactory level in competency application and execute completion of hours as directed by instdructor for temporary color, virgin lightener application, retouch lightener, virgin tint, retouch tint, lash and brow tint, cap applications, and foiling techniques with instructor guidance support.

Skin, Scalp, and Hair Treatments

  • Integrate accurate methods of procedures; meet satisfactory level in competency application and execute completion of hours as directed by instructor for facials, scalp treatments, and hair treatments with instructor guidance support.

Haircutting

  • Integrate accurate methods of angles, elevations, and guidelines; meet satisfactory level of competency and execution satisfactory hours in completion as directed by instructor for haircutting with instructor guidance support.
  • Demonstrate safe and proper use of basic clipper techniques with the use of guards with instructor guidance support.
  • Demonstrate safe and proper use of basic clipper techniques with the clipper over comb techniques with instructor guidance support.
  • Implement principles for precision haircutting incorporating geometric forms and angles with instructor guidance support.

Styling

  • Integrate accurate methods of procedures; meet satisfactory level in competency applications and execute completion of hours as directed by instructor for roller sets, comb outs, thermal styling and waving, blow-dry styling, pin curls, and finger waves with instructor guidance support.

Dispensary

  • Follow guidelines set forth by instructor for dispensary tasks to include mixing, filling, and dispensing products to students with instructor guidance support.

Customer Service Skills

  • Interact with clients; display effective listening skills and engage in professional interactions.
  • Maintain professional control when handling client complaints.

Product Knowledge/Retail

  • Decide and recommend the appropriate products to be used for salon services rendered with instructor guidance support..
  • Educate client on appropriate recommended tools, products, and additional services.
  • Promote ticket up grading and pre-booking.

Safety Precautions/Decontamination

  • Follow salon safety and decontamination compliance guidelines; for cosmetology.
  • Seek assistance from instructor during potential accidental exposure incidents.
  • Follow Hazardous Duty Standards Act requirements for cosmetology
  • Display awareness of Georgia State Board disinfection requirements for i.e., proper storing of tools, materials and supplies, logging of foot spa, proper cleaning and disinfection of foot spa, and tool and equipment.
  • Display consciousness of State Board Regulations i.e., proper posing of required signage.

State Board Foundation Prep

  • Understand eligibility criteria requirements for candidate licensure applications.
  • Prepare licensure application checklist.
  • Interpret candidate briefing and verbal instructions for licensure examination.
  • Understand proper protocol for blood spill contamination procedures.
  • Organize supplies needed for licensure preparation.
  • Establish guidelines for set up and client protection.
  • Integrate technical skill and licensure specific skill understanding in demonstration and performance of thermal curing, haircutting, chemical waving, hair lightening, hair coloring, chemical relaxing, basic facial and sculptured nail application.
  • Review cognitive theory skills for licensure specific examination.
