This course introduces fundamental microbiology and infection control techniques. Topics include classification, structure, and behavior of pathogenic microbes; mode of disease transmission; body's defense and immunity; infectious diseases; and infection control procedures in accordance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.

Course Outcomes

Classification, Structure, and Behavior of Pathogenic Microbes

  • Describe the different classifications of microorganisms and identify the structure of each.

Modes of Disease Transmission

  • Identify the modes of disease transmission and procedures required to prevent and/or minimize the transmission of the disease in the dental office.
  • Explain the relationship between disease and host resistance.

Body Defense and Immunity

  • Discuss the concept of normal flora and portions of the body supporting a normal flora.
  • Identify and discuss specific and nonspecific internal defense mechanisms.
  • Differentiate between innate and acquired immunity.
  • Describe the allergic immune response.
  • Identify the role of S. mutants and Lactobacilli in dental caries.
  • Describe the clinical presentation of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) and the microorganisms in adult periodontal disease.
  • Differentiate between oral bacterial systemic disease with oral manifestations to include tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhea, and candidiasis.
  • Differentiate between viral systemic diseases to include herpes viruses, hepatitis, and AIDS.

Infection Control Procedures in Accordance with CDC Recommendations and OSHA Guidelines

  • Demonstrate aseptic condition environment maintenance for dental operating equipment, clinical areas, and storage areas.
  • Differentiate between sanitization, infection, and sterilization.
  • Demonstrate cross-contamination and prevention disease-transmission prevention methods at chairside by using hygiene and barrier techniques.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate method of disinfection/sanitization for dental instruments and supplies.
  • Store all instruments providing asepsis.
  • Demonstrate surgical scrub performance techniques.
  • Describe the use of vaccination for prevention of Hepatitis B.
  • Identify and describe the Centers for Disease Control and American Dental Association guidelines for infection control in the dental office.
  • Describe the role of OSHA in enforcing these infection control procedures.
  • Demonstrate infection control procedures according to the Centers for Disease Control and American Dental Association guidelines in the dental environment.
