Course Description
This course reviews information concerning all didactic areas tested by the Dental Assisting National Board. Topics include collecting and recording clinical data, dental radiography, chairside dental procedures, prevention of disease transmission, patient education and oral health management, office management procedures, and test-taking skills.
Course Outcomes
Collect and Record Clinical Data
- Correctly review patients' medical/dental histories.
- Identify dental charting symbols.
- Demonstrate competence in charting oral conditions.
- Identify treatment procedures and diagnostic aids.
Dental Radiography
- Review radiographic films and determine any errors which may be present.
- Identify processing procedures for radiographic films.
- Describe the procedure to minimize patient and operator exposure.
- Define quality assurance.
- Identify techniques to aid in quality assurance.
Chair-side Dental Procedures
- Identify four-handed dentistry techniques.
- Recall how to select and prepare dental armamentarium.
- Describe patient management techniques.
- Identify lab materials and procedures.
- Describe the selection/manipulation and application of various dental materials.
- Identify four-handed techniques as applied to the dental specialties.
Prevention of Disease Transmission
- Recall the modes of disease transmission and procedures required to prevent and/or minimize the transmission of disease in the dental office.
- Differentiate between sterilization ad disinfection.
- Describe how to maintain aseptic conditions, including the use of protective devices.
Patient Education and Oral Health Management
- Describe the procedures used to assess oral health information.
- Describe pre-post treatment instructions.
- Identify plaque control techniques.
Office Management Procedures
- Review supply and inventory control procedures.
- Describe appointment control/recall procedures.
- Review legal aspects of dentistry.
Management of Dental Office Emergencies
- Identify techniques used to prevent office emergencies.
- Describe application of techniques use in office emergencies.
- Recall signs and symptoms of emergencies.
