Nature of the Work

Medical Office Assistants are allied health professionals who are responsible for various medical office administrative tasks beginning with initial patient contact through final payment while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. They perform front office functions such as scheduling, communicating with healthcare professionals, patients, and third-party payers. Administrative duties for Medical Office Assistants include organizing patients’ medical records, completing insurance forms, billing, bookkeeping, and financial management. A MOA can also perform telephone communications and various correspondences, greet patients, schedule appointments, and maintain electronic medical records (EMR) information.

The Advanced Medical Assisting TCC program is designed for students seeking to elevate their careers within the Medical Assisting profession. This program equips students with the skills and knowledge required to perform both clinical procedures and administrative tasks in a medical office or healthcare setting. The Advanced Medical Assisting provides a curriculum that integrates hands-on practice for topics such as obtaining medical histories, vital signs, anthropometric measurements, preparing a sterile field, performing electrocardiograph testing, administering medications including injections, obtaining lab specimens and diagnostic testing, drawing blood for testing, recording medical information, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting physicians during a patient’s examination. The program emphasizes critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and communication skills essential for managing the complexities of modern healthcare environments. Upon completion, students will be eligible to take a certification test. After passing the certification test, the student will be positioned for a career as a Certified Medical Assistant. After becoming certified, the job opportunities in all medical practice areas are excellent.
