Course Description
This course provides instruction on the installation and service of residential air conditioning systems. Topics include installation procedures, split-systems, add-on systems, packaged systems, system wiring, control circuits, and safety. Students must pay a $35 supply fee when registering for this course.

Installation Procedures
Order Description
1 Discuss the installation of various types of cooling and dehumidifying equipment.
2 Install a residential central air conditioning unit.
3 Design and install a condensate drain system.
Split Systems
Order Description
1 Discuss how the split-system differs from the packaged system.
2 Observe and explain the functions of the split-system components.
Add-on Systems
Order Description
1 Discuss how an add-on system can be installed on an existing heating system.
2 Properly connect an evaporator coil to a furnace plenum.
3 Install a condensing unit to an existing heating system.
Packaged Systems
Order Description
1 Discuss the basic advantages of a packaged system.
2 Evacuate a packaged system and charge with proper refrigerant type and amount.
System Wiring
Order Description
1 Estimate the factors to be considered when wiring an air conditioning system.
2 Following the manufacturer’s instructions, completely wire an air conditioning system with
the proper wire.
3 Consult the National Electrical Code to ensure compliance.
Air Filtration
Order Description
1 Change or wash filters.
2 Service electronic filters.
Heat-Load Calculation
Order Description
1 Discuss the various tables that are used in heat-load calculations.
2 Discuss factors which affect heat loss.
3 Work several test problems using heat loss calculation procedures.
4 Discuss factors that affect heat gain.
5 Work several test problems using heat gain calculation procedures.
Duct Design
Order Description
1 Discuss several acceptable methods for duct design.
2 Assemble two short duct runs using different types of duct.
3 Discuss the factors involved in a duct application.
4 Identify types of duct materials.
5 Explain the purpose of registers and diffusers.
6 Define velocity, CFM, static pressure, and length of ducting as they apply to duct design and
construction.
Safety

1 Identify and discuss potential electrical hazards and concerns encountered while working with
air conditioning wiring and control systems.
