Course Description
This course provides instruction on the principles, applications, and operation of a residential heat pump system. Topics include installation and servicing procedures, electrical components, geothermal ground source energy supplies, dual fuel, valves, and troubleshooting techniques. Students must pay a $30 supply fee when registering for this course.

Installation Procedures
Order Description
1 Discuss heat pump theory.
2 Identify and discuss the types of heat pumps used in the industry.
3 Identify the reversing valve on a heat pump and explain its purpose.
4 Properly evacuate and charge a heat pump system with the correct amount of refrigerant.
5 Identify and explain components found in heat pumps.
6 Discuss heat pump thermostats and how they differ from conventional thermostats.
Servicing Procedures
Order Description
1 Install an electric furnace with a capacity of 150,000 BTU or less.
2 Remove or replace an electric furnace with a capacity of 150,000 BTU or less.
3 Install heating blowers.
4 Install insulating materials on ducts.
5 Connect heating outlets on ducts.
6 Lubricate heating blowers.
Electrical Components

1 Identify and explain the various electrical components in the heat pump cycle.
2 Install a humidistat.
3 Install a relay.
4 Install a safety control.
5 Install a starting or running capacitor.
Geothermal Ground Source Energy Supplies

5 Discuss the inspection and cleaning of ducts.
