Course Description

This course introduces air and hydraulic brake systems used on medium and heavy duty trucks. Classroom instruction emphasizes brake systems theory and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). Topics include an introduction to hydraulic systems and safety, air brakes air supply and system service, air brakes mechanical service, parking brakes, hydraulic brake system and service, hydraulic brakes mechanical service, hydraulic brakes power assist units, anti-lock brake systems (ABS) and automatic traction control (ATC), and wheel bearings. Students must pay a $25 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

Introduction to Hydraulic Systems and Safety

   1            Demonstrate master cylinder removal and installation and or bleed system.
   2            Identify system fluid types.
   3            Observe placement of equipment/component safety labels and placards.
   4            Inspect and observe master cylinder for restrictions and leaks.
   5            Perform fluid level and inspect for contaminated fluid.
   6            Observe hose and line (length, size, routing, bend radii, and protection) and connections.
   7            Observe causes for seal failure, remove and replace hydraulic actuators and repair.
   8            Perform system purging and/or bleed system in accordance with manufacturer's recommended
                 procedures.

 

Air Brakes Air Supply and System Service

   4            Inspect camshafts, rollers, bushings, seals, spacers, retainers, brake spiders, shields, anchor pins,
