Course Description
This course introduces the operational theory, systems terminology, PLC installation, and programming procedures for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Instructors place emphasis on PLC programming, connections, installation, and start-up procedures. Other topics include timers and counters, relay logic instructions, and hardware and software applications.

Order Description
1 Identify and discuss function of all PLC components.

PLC Installation, Configuration and Setup
Order Description
1 Completely install a PLC processor, power supply and IO cards.
2 Use PLC software to setup and configure a PLC for operation.
PLC Programming Basics
Order Description
1 Discuss the operation of the following logic gates: AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR, NOT and
BUFFERS.
2 Discuss and convert values using Decimal, Binary, Octal, Hexadecimal and Binary Coded Decimal.
3 Discuss the terms related to data storage including: Data Words, Bytes, Nibbles, Bits, Signed and
Unsigned Integers and Double Words.
Ladder Logic Instructions

1 Discuss and execute relay instructions including Examine if Closed/Normally Open, Examine if
Open/Normally Closed, Output/Coil, Latch and Unlatch and One Shot.
2 Discuss the addressing for bit level instructions.
Timers and Counters

1 Discuss the operation of on-delay timers, off-delay timers and retentive timers.
2 Program and execute each type of timer in a program.
3 Reset operation for timers.
4 Discuss the operation of up and down counters.
5 Program and execute each type of counter in a program.
6 Reset operation for counters.
Connecting Field Devices to I/O Cards
Order Description
1 Discuss the operation of Triacs and Diacs.
2 Discuss the difference between Sourcing and Sinking.
3 Discuss the difference between NPN and PNP.
4 Install switches and other control devices to input cards and address the terminals.
5 Install relays, indicator lights, solenoids and motor starters to output cards and address the terminals.
