Course Description
This course introduces the touch system of keyboarding placing emphasis on correct techniques. Topics include computer hardware; computer software; file management; learning the alphabetic keyboard, the numeric keyboard, and keypad; building speed and accuracy; and proofreading. Students attain a minimum of 30 GWAM (gross words a minute) on 3-minute timings with no more than 3 errors.
Course Outcomes
Computer Hardware, Software, and File Management
- Identify the major parts of a computer (monitor, mouse, keyboard, CPU).
- Identify removable computer devices (diskette, jump drive, CD).
- Demonstrate software programs such as a Learning Management System (i.e., Blackboard), keyboarding program, and/or email software.
- Utilize computer operating system to copy, create, delete, upload, and/or download files.
The Alphabetic Keyboard
- Use correct fingers to key alphabetic keys by touch.
The Numeric Keypad and Symbols
- Use correct fingers to key the numeric keypad by touch.
- Use correct fingers to key symbols on the number row of the keyboard by touch.
Building Speed and Accuracy
- Construct (key) from straight copy at a minimum rate of 30 GWAM for 3 minutes, with a maximum of 3 errors.
Building Proofreading Skills
- Recognize typographical and content errors by making error in documents and keying correct copy.
