Course Description

This course provides an introduction to fundamental electrical concepts and theories as applied to the air conditioning industry. Topics include AC and DC theory, electric meters, electrical diagrams, distribution systems, electrical panels, voltage circuits, code requirements, and safety.

Course Outcomes

 AC and DC Theory
  • Define electrical terms such to include conductor, insulator, voltage, resistance, amperage, and wattage.
  • Discuss the differences between AC and DC current.
  • Solve various problems using Ohm’s Law.
  • Discuss how electromagnetic are used in electrical applications.
Electric Meters 
  • Discuss basic principles of electric meters.
  • Discuss the differences between voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter.
  • Measure and calculate voltage, current, and resistance.

Electrical Diagrams

  • Discuss the basic concepts of electrical circuits.
  • Identify and select several loads to be used in electrical circuits.
  • Correctly identify common electrical symbols.
  • Construct and operate simple series circuits.
  • Construct and operate parallel circuits.
  • Construct and operate series-parallel circuits.

Distribution Systems  

  • Discuss how electrical energy is distributed from the power plant to the home.  
Electrical Panels  
  • Discuss panel requirements for HVAC equipment.
  • Discuss types of panels used in homes and businesses.
  • Properly size disconnect panels for HVAC equipment.    
Voltage Circuits 
  • Discuss the advantages of using low voltage circuits.
  • Properly wire a low voltage circuit.
  • Properly size wiring circuits for HVAC equipment.
  • Identify electrical components used in low voltage applications.
  • Check electrical components for proper operation.     

Code Requirements 

  • Discuss importance and function the National Electrical Code.
  • Wire a condensing unit per the NEC.         

Safety

  • Identify and discuss safety concerns as they apply to electrical fundamentals.
