Course Description

This course provides instruction on the design and installation of residential air conditioning systems. Topics include heat load studies, duct design procedures, split systems, packaged systems, system wiring, control circuits, and safety.

Course Outcomes

Installation Procedures
  • Discuss the installation of various types of cooling and dehumidifying equipment.
  • Install a residential central air conditioning unit.
  • Design and install a condensate drain system.

Split Systems

  • Discuss how the split-system differs from the packaged system.
  • Observe and explain the functions of the split-system components.

Add-on Systems

  • Discuss how an add-on system can be installed on an existing heating system.
  • Properly connect an evaporator coil to a furnace plenum.
  • Install a condensing unit to an existing heating system.

Packaged Systems

  • Discuss the basic advantages of a packaged system.
  • Evacuate a packaged system and charge with proper refrigerant type and amount.

System Wiring

  • Estimate the factors to be considered when wiring an air conditioning system.
  • Following the manufacturer's instructions, completely wire an air conditioning system with the proper wire.
  • Consult the National Electrical Code to ensure compliance.

Air Filtration

  • Change or wash filters.
  • Service electronic filters.

Heat-Load Calculation

  • Discuss the various tables that are used in heat-loaded calculations.
  • Discuss factors which affect heat loss.
  • Work several test problems using heat loss calculation procedures.
  • Discuss factors that affect heat gain.
  • Work several test problems using heat gain calculation procedures.

Duct Design

  • Discuss several acceptable methods for duct design.
  • Assemble two short duct runs using different types of duct.
  • Discuss the factors involved in a duct application.
  • Identify types of duct materials.
  • Explain the purpose of registers and diffusers.
  • Define velocity, CFM, static pressure, and length of ducting as they apply to duct design and construction.

Safety

  • Identify and discuss potential electrical hazards and concerns encountered while working with air conditioning wiring and control systems.
