Course Description

The course introduces the spray gun equipment, materials, and techniques used in the application of special paints. Instructors will place emphasis on automotive refinishing theories and procedures. Students must pay a $35 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

  Refinishing Application

     Order            Description

1               Demonstrate the proper procedures in surface preparation in refinishing interior and
                 exterior surfaces.
2               Identify special primers for interior refinishing.

3               Demonstrate the ability to properly use and maintain all spraying equipment

                 used in automotive refinishing.

 

Color Application

      Order            Description

1                Apply colors in accordance with specifications.

2                Apply solid and metallic topcoats to include correct procedures for each application.

 

Original Finish Sealing

       Order            Description
          1                Demonstrate and identify different sealers and their procedures according to
                            manufacturer specifications.
          2                Follow all procedures and techniques which apply to selecting and applying the
                            appropriate sealers.
          3                Demonstrate the ability to refinish a panel.

4                Demonstrate the ability to make a spot repair on a panel.

5                Demonstrate correct procedures in blending.


Panel and Spot Repair and Blending

      Order            Description

1                Demonstrate the ability to refinish a panel in metallic or solid color.

2                Demonstrate the ability to make a spot repair on a panel.

3                Demonstrate correct procedures in blending.

 

Thinners, Reducers, and Additives

     Order            Description
         1                Demonstrate the ability to select the proper thinner or reducer for a specific type of 
                           material.
         2                Identify the types of reducer and thinner - why and when it is used.
         3                Explain why special additives are used in automotive refinishing.
         4                Identify and utilize materials based on factors such as temperature, humidity, and viscosity
                           of the material.
         5                Demonstrate knowledge and purpose of using additives in paints.

 

Fiberglass, Plastics, and Rubber Refinishing

      Order            Description

1                Explain special primers and identify which plastic needs which refinish procedures.

2                Explain texturing procedures.

3                Demonstrate proper retexturing procedures.

4                Demonstrate proper refinishing procedures.

 

Paint Identification

      Order            Description

1                Identify substrates refinished with urethane materials to include proper
    procedures for material acquisition.

 

Base Metals Preparation and Priming

      Order            Description

1                Demonstrate the ability to use appropriate techniques for preparation and
    primer application to include proper materials.

 

Equipment Use and Maintenance

      Order            Description

1                Describe and use equipment effectively to include maintenance techniques
    and procedures.

 

Base Coat/Clear Coat Application

1                Demonstrate the ability to correctly apply B/C C/C procedures.
