Course Description
This course introduces procedures and resources used in the identification and assessment of automotive collision damages. This course provides instruction on the hydraulic systems and for the diagnosis, straightening, measuring, and alignment of automobile frames and bodies. Students registering for this course must pay a $30 supply fee.
Course Outcomes
Hydraulic Systems
Order Description
1 Operate and maintain hydraulic equipment correctly and safely.
2 Dress safely with steel toed shoes.
3 Describe use of hydraulic equipment.
4 Operate basic pushing set ups.
5 Operate pulling set ups.
6 Operate spreading set ups.
7 Operate guided set ups.
8 Operate body and frame straightener machine.
Assessment plan determination
Order Description
1 Assess damage by use of zone concept.
Damage analysis
Order Description
1 Classify damage as primary or secondary.
2 Convert the laws of motion as they apply to estimating.
3 Determine side impact, frontal collision, rear collision, or roll-over damage.
Collision estimation
Order Description
1 Select trade terminology in regards to estimates.
2 Determine parts to be repaired or replaced.
3 Determine material cost.
4 Interpret insurance coverage and customer relations.
5 Describe the purpose of subletting.
Service manual use
Order Description
1 Interpret the collision estimating guide for parts, prices, labor and refinishing time.
2 Identify proper reference manuals and collision estimating guides.
Computerized estimation
Order Description
1 Identify the two types of computer estimating systems.
Alignment measurement systems
Order Description
1 Identify the various types of conventional frame construction.
2 Identify the five basic frame misalignments.
3 Identify the various types of equipment used to measure frame misalignment.
Damage diagnosis
Order Description
1 Measure damaged frame with tape ruler and tram gauge.
2 Install, set up, and read self centering gauges, or tracking gauge to determine type
and extent of damage.
3 Demonstrate ability to use dimension books to check alignment or misalignment of
frame and suspension components.
Equipment types and usage
Order Description
1 Identify various types of equipment to repair damaged frame members.
2 Describe procedure to set up and anchor various pieces of equipment.
Frame straightening, repair, and alignment
Order Description
1 Demonstrate proper procedure to repair each of the five misalignments.
2 Demonstrate various pulls from all angles for each of the five misalignments.
3 Check repair for alignment within manufacture specifications properly.
Safety precautions
Order Description
1 List all safety hazards that apply to repair procedures.
2 Practice safety in all phases of measurement, diagnosis and repair procedures.
