Course Description

This course emphasizes procedures for office management in dental practices. Topics include oral and written communication, records management, appointment control, dental insurance form preparation, accounting procedures, supply and inventory control, employability skills, and basic computer skills. Students will obtain basic skills in computer use and the utilization of these skills to perform office procedures on a microcomputer.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to meet the following per unit:

I. Oral and Written communication

1. Communicate effectively and establish a good working relationship with patients

     and other members of the dental health care team.     

2. Utilize effective telephone techniques

3. Prepare business correspondence.

 

II. Records Management

1. Establish and maintain an effective appointment control system

2. Present case presentations to patients and set up payment systems

3. Perform general office procedures.

4. Maintain a filing system for patient and practice records.

 

III. Appointment Control

1. Establish and maintain an effective appointment control system.

 

IV. Dental Insurance form preparation

1. Prepare insurance forms

 

V. Accounting Procedures

1. Perform banking procedures.

2. Prepare payroll

3. Balance and replenish petty cash.

4. Maintain a monthly summary of earnings and expenses.

5. Maintain a yearly summary of earnings and expenses.

 

VI. Supply and Inventory Control

1. Maintain and control supplies through an inventory control system.

2. Order and purchase supplies.

 

VII. Basic Computer Skills

  1. Use basic computer skills for performing front office procedures utilizing dental   practice management software (Dentrix)

 

VIII. Employability Skills

  1. Prepare an accurate application form
  2. Write a cover letter.
  3. Write a resume and references.
  4. Participate in the interview process.
