Course Description
This practicum continues to focus on assisting chairside with advanced general dentistry procedures. It will emphasis dental office management, preventive dentistry, and expanded functions. Topics include advanced general dentistry procedures, preventive dentistry, dental office management, expanded functions, chairside in specialties, and management of dental office emergencies.
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
I. Advanced General Dentistry
- Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium fir advanced general dentistry procedures.
- Use concepts of four-handed dentistry assist with advanced general dentistry procedures.
II. Chairside in Specialty
- Use four-handed dentistry techniques to assist chairside in dental specialties.
- Prepare all materials for delivery to the dentistry.
- Utilize patient management techniques
III. Preventive Dentistry
- Explain the etiology and prevention of dental diseases.
- Provide preventive oral health information/instruction to the patient based on individual needs.
IV. Dental Office Management
- Communicate effectively with patient and members of the dental health are team.
- Operate office equipment
- Maintain Records
- Manage incoming and outgoing mail.
- Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable records.
V. Expanded Functions
- Perform expanded functions that are recognized by the State Dental Practice Act, as delegated by the supervising dentist.
VI. Management of Dental Office Emergencies
- Assist the dentist with management of dental office emergencies.

Course Competencies
Course Competencies: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Prepare the treatment room to receive and treat the patient upon using infection control procedures.
- Prepare appropriate treatment trays with armamentarium in sequence of use.
- Seat and prepare the patient: position and adjust the equipment if needed.
- Implement four-handed dentistry concepts in all treatment procedures.
- Maintain field of operation during dental procedures through the use of retraction, evacuation, irrigation, drying etc.
- Using the concepts of four-handed dentistry, assist with general dentistry and specialty procedures.
- Place and remove cotton rolls.
- Follow the guidelines of occupational safety for dental office personnel as specified by OSHA and the ADA.
- Incorporate all safety measures when using and delivering toxic materials and/or irritants.
10. Assist with the recording and charting of normal and abnormal finding in the oral cavity.
11. Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for specialty dental procedures.
12. Remove sutures.
13. Assist with, mix, change and/or remove periodontal surgical dressings.
14. Assist with, mix, change, and/or remove sedative dressings.
15. Perform a surgical scrub.
16. Provide patient with oral and/or written pre-and post-operative treatment instructions.
17. Explain and clarify the procedures and services being delivered to patients and/or their family.
18. Explain the etiology and prevention of dental disease.
19. Explain to the patient the effects of all types of fluorides and possible side effects.
20. Instruct the patient on how to care for removable and non-removable appliances and prostheses.
21. Clean and polish removable appliances and prostheses.
22. Fabricate custom impression trays.
23. Assist with a pulp vitality test.
24. Assist with and/or apply and remove the rubber dam.
25. Assist with and/or apply topical fluoride.
26. Instruct and evaluate basic nutritional needs of individual patients.
27. Maintain and control supplies through and inventory control system.
28. Order and purchase supplies.
29. Record treatment and prescriptions.
30. Monitor and record patient’s response to drugs/medications.
31. Prevent cross-contamination at chairside through the use of barrier techniques.
32. Demonstrate the ability to calm and reassure apprehensive patients.
33. Communicate effectively and 4establish a good working relationship with patients and other members of the dental health team.
34. Establish and maintain an effective appointment control system.
35. Perform pegboard bookkeeping procedures.
36. Utilized effective telephone techniques.
37. Prepare insurance forms.

40. Prepare, mix, deliver and store dental materials.

42. Identify the legal significance of medical and dental histories.
43. Identify the factors and precautions necessary to prevent lawsuits against dental personnel.
44. Maintain the patient’s right to privacy.
45. Recognize the legal responsibilities of the dental assistant in relation to the State Dental Practice Act.
46. Take and record vital signs.
47. Assemble and maintain appropriate emergency supplies, drugs and equipment.
48. Recognize the signs and symptoms related to specific medical conditions/emergencies likely to occur in the dental office.
49. Respond to and assist in the management of chairside emergencies including CPR.
50. Implement and/or assist with appropriate procedures for the management of dental emergencies.
51. Act as a dental professional and participate in being part of the “dental team”. Be a team player.
52. Perform procedures/tasks as directed by the dentist.
53. Perform procedures/tasks as directed by other staff members.
