Course Description

This course introduces welding and cutting procedures used in auto collision repair. Emphasis will be placed on MIG welding techniques through a variety of different procedures. Students must pay a $20 supply fee when registering for this course.

Course Outcomes

MIG Welding

 

      Order          Description

1              Identify the three classes of welding.

2              Explain, set up, and properly operate a MIG welding machine.

3              Demonstrate ability to prepare a panel for welding with the MIG welder by removing rust, paint, caulking and thoroughly cleaning metal and fitting and clamping metal for welding.

4              Name the six basic welding techniques.

5              Demonstrate ability to use MIG welding in application of 6 basic welding techniques.

6              Identify basic welding joints and properly make each with MIG welding equipment.

7              Set all adjustments and obtain correct wire size for metal to be welded.

 

Aluminum Welding

 

      Order          Description

1              Demonstrate the ability to MIG weld aluminum in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

 

   Metal Cutting Techniques

 

      Order          Description

1              Identify cutting equipment.

2              Demonstrate the ability to set up equipment.

3              Light and adjust proper cutting flame properly.

4              Demonstrate ability to cut different thickness of metal.



5              Identify and properly cut metal with mechanical cutters.

 

Resistance Welding

 

       Order          Description

1              Identify resistance welding equipment.

2              Determine how and when to use resistance welding.

3              Properly set up and use resistance equipment.

 

Unibody Welding Techniques

 

       Order          Description

1              Identify high strength steels.

2              Explain how it is affected by heat ranges.

3              Explain why and how to use temperature sticks.

4              Follow proper cutting and welding techniques.

 

    Weld Removal Techniques

 

       Order          Description

1              Identify weld removal equipment.

2              Demonstrate ability to properly remove weld joints, spot welds, braze joints.

 

Plasma Arc Cutting

 

       Order          Description

1              Demonstrate safe use of plasma equipment, procedures, and operations.

 

Plug Welding Collision Repair

 

       Order          Description

1              Explain gun movement, time, and burn back settings.

2              Identify size of plug weld for different gauges of metal.

3              Demonstrate methods of cutting holes in metal for plug welding.

4              Demonstrate plug weld on test panel.

 

Butt Welding Collision Repair

 

       Order          Description

1              Demonstrate proper fitting of two edges to be welded.

2              Demonstrate proper types of weld to eliminate warpage of metal.

3              Demonstrate lead width and height for proper weld.

4              Demonstrate proper procedures on a test panel.

 

Lap Welding Collision Repair

 

       Order          Description

1              Explain and demonstrate the lap weld and when to use this weld.

2              Demonstrate proper settings on equipment.

3              Prepare metal for proper lap weld.

4              Demonstrate lap weld on test panel.
