Course Description

This course introduces the various mechanical and electrical systems found on vehicles typically requiring repair of damages incurred through automobile collisions.

Course Outcomes

Engine Accessory Systems

      Order           Description

1                Handle and care for tools and small equipment safely and correctly.

2                Demonstrate shop safety.

3                Determine repair costs using estimating, flat rate, collision, parts and
                  manufacturer's manual.
4                Raise a car on a hydraulic lift - use proper shop manual.

5                Inspect, remove and replace alternator.

6                Inspect, remove and replace fan.

7                Inspect, remove and replace fan clutch.

8                Inspect, remove and replace water pump.

9                Inspect, remove and replace pulley fan belt.

10               Inspect, remove and replace fan belt.

11               Inspect, remove and replace radiator and hose.

12               Inspect, remove and replace starter.

13               Inspect, remove and replace battery.

 

Emission Control Systems

1                Select proper shop manual.

2                Select appropriate tools.

3                Test, remove and replace charcoal canister and filter.

4                Test, remove and replace PCV valve.

         5                Test, remove and replace EGR valve.

 6                Inspect, remove and replace catalytic converter.

 7                Test, remove and replace air pump.

 8                Inspect, remove and replace air filter.

 9                Inspect, remove and replace fuel tank.

 10               Inspect, remove and replace mufflers and resonators.

 

Air Conditioning Systems

    Order            Description

1                Practice safety precautions for eye care and handling refrigerants.

2                Select tools and proper shop manual.

3                Inspect, remove and replace condenser.

4                Inspect, remove and replace expansion valve.

5                Inspect, remove and replace evaporator.

6                Inspect, remove and replace compressor.

7                Inspect, remove and replace receiver-drier.

8                Evacuate and charge system according to manufacturer's specifications.

9                Leak test air conditioning with an electronic detector.

 

Braking Systems

    Order            Description
        1                Safely operate floor jack or hydraulic hoist.

2                Practice safety precautions.

3                Select tools and proper shop manual.

4                Inspect, remove and replace brake rotor.

5                Inspect, remove and replace drum brakes and shoes.

6                Inspect, remove and replace disc brake pads.

7                Inspect, remove and replace hoses and lines.

8                Inspect, remove and replace master cylinder.

9                Inspect, remove and replace wheel cylinder.

10               Inspect, remove and replace brake boosters (manual and power).

11               Bleed brake system.

12               Replace brake fluid.

 

Steering Column Systems

    Order            Description

1                Identify types of steering columns.

2                Remove and replace steering wheel.

3                Remove and replace horn button.

4                Remove and replace cruise control.

5                Remove and replace tilt and telescope column.

6                Remove and replace windshield wiper switch.

7                Remove and replace collapsing mesh and canister steering column.

8                Remove and replace signal light switch.

 

Engine Removal and Replacement Sequence

    Order            Description

1                Select proper shop manual and tools.

2                Safely operate a floor jack and hydraulic lift.

3                Inspect engine for cracks visually.

4                Remove and replace engine.

 

Lighting Systems

    Order            Description

        1                Explain wire sizing, color coding schematics and protective devices.

2                Trace the headlight circuit on a vehicle.

3                Select the proper wiring diagram from the shop manual.

4                Disassemble headlight.

5                Remove and replace headlights.

6                Remove and replace park lights.

7                Remove and replace brake lights.

8                Repair wiring assembly and plug.

9                Replace license plate light.

10               Remove bulbs and locate fuse panel.

11               Remove and replace dome, courtesy and dash light bulbs and hazard flashers.

12               Remove and replace corner lights.

13               Remove and replace side marker lights.

14               Test lighting.

15               Remove and replace tail and signal lights.

 

Engine Wiring

    Order            Description

1                Demonstrate engine electrical safety precautions.

2                Disconnect and connect starter motor.

3                Disconnect and connect battery.

4                Remove and replace wire connectors.

5                Disconnect and connect distributor.

6                Disconnect and connect alternator.

7                Disconnect and connect ignition coil(s).

8                Disconnect and connect oil pressure switch.

9                Disconnect and connect water temperature sending unit.

10               Disconnect and connect fuel cut-off valve solenoid.

        1                Identify damaged suspension and steering components on a unibody vehicle

1                Initiate the bounce-rebound check system.

2                Determine if any suspension or steering components is misaligned or damaged.

 

Front End Suspension Equipment

1               Demonstrate the ability to properly use all equipment and tools safely and
   correctly for front end suspension repairs.

1               Demonstrate knowledge of X member by explaining repair or replacement 
   using manufacturers' recommended procedures.

2               Repair or replace X member using safe and proper manufacturers'
                 recommended techniques.
3               Restore corrosion protection.
