Course Description

This course develops mathematical competencies as applied to machine tool technology. Instructors place emphasis on the use of machining formulas by incorporating algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric functions. Topics include machining algebra and geometry, applied geometry, and applied trigonometry.

Course Outcomes

Machining Algebra and Geometry
  O
rder       Description

1           Demonstrate the use of algebraic formulas from known values in machine tool applications.

2           Manipulate equations using practical machining formulas.

3           Find machine feeds, speeds, length of belts, and length of band saw blades using algebraic
  equations.

4           Identify geometric figures as they apply to machine tool technology.

5           Determine angles with a protractor to nearest degree.

6           Compute angles to the nearest second.

7           Summarize the importance of measuring angles in machine tool work.

Applied Machining Geometry
  O
rder       Description

1           Describe how points can be located using arcs and angles in machine tool applications.

2           Relate the use of Pythagorean relations to machine tool operations in layout and location of points.

3           Define the terms that apply to using the circle to find points in layout to include arcs,
sections, chords, radii, and circumferences in machining applications.

4           Use geometric figures in inscribed in the circle to locate multiple equally spaced points on the
  circumference of a circle.

5           List the uses of geometric functions in machining.

6           Use geometric construction to find center points, divide angles, construct right angles for layout,
and to find the center of a circle or arc for machining purposes.

7           Lay out machining work pieces using geometric applications.

A
pplied Machining Trigonometry
  Or
der       Description

1           Explain how to construct a triangle when the value of one side is known.

2           Define the six trigonometric functions found in machining applications.

3           Explain the use of trigonometric tables.

4           List uses of trigonometric functions in machining.

5           Explain the Cartesian system, how it applies to machine operations, and how to determine the
  "Z" axis on a machine.

6           Calculate the angle to a given function.

7           Find the function to a given angle.

8           Compute the third angle when one angle and one side of a triangle is given.

9           Determine a point when an arc and an angle are given from a reference point.

10          Lay out machining work pieces using trigonometric functions.
