Course Description

This course provides students with an opportunity to perform the creative and critical thinking skills needed to fabricate, modify, and maintain complex machine assemblies. Instructors place emphasis on bench work; lathe, mill, and grinder operations; tool selection; and sequencing fabrication operations. Topics include job planning, preparation for machining operations, and machining operations.

Course Outcomes

Job Planning
  O
rder             Description
1                  Analyze a given problem and develop an appropriate solution.
2                  Identify tolerances and quality concepts necessary to produce functional products.
3                  Produce a working drawing of all necessary parts required for problem solution.
4                  Review vendor catalogs and machinist handbook(s) for possible prefabricated parts and
                         dimensions required in solving problems.

Preparation for Machining Operations
  O
rder             Description
1                  Analyze the project and determine necessary machining operations.
2                  Analyze the project and determine order of operations.
3                  Analyze the job requirements for materials selection.
4                  Choose the appropriate equipment for each required machining operation to produce a finished
                         product.
5                  Select appropriate tool(s) for each machining operation to assure accuracy, tolerances, and
quality requirements for the finished product.

Machining Operations
  O
rder             Description
1                  Identify the work handling method and select the appropriate tool holder(s).
2                  Select the appropriate cutting fluid for the work required.
3                  Calculate the appropriate speeds and feed rates for the tools and materials used.
4                  Make part(s) required for a given project.
5                  Inspect all prefabricated and manufactured parts to assure tolerances and quality standards are
                         achieved.
6                  Assemble all prefabricated and fabricated parts and perform operational test.
7                  Evaluate the product developed through an industrial machine application.
